ACCENT R Installation Procedure

You need approximately 60,000 blocks of disk space to install all of the files associated with ACCENT R version 12.51.

We recommend that you perform the installation from the SYSTEM username or from another account with the same privileges. The INSTALLprogram requires the same privileges as used in the SYSTEM username.

The steps for installing ACCENT R are described here. User inputs are shown in bold, and <CR> represents the carriage return key.

1. Prepare for Installation of ACCENT R

A. Determine the number of free blocks on the target disk:

$ SHOW DEVICE ddcu: <CR>

where dd is a code for the device type,

 c is the code for the controller designation,

 u is the unit number of the target disk drive.

The number of free blocks required on the disk for the installation is approximately 61,000.

B. Create the Default Directory for ACCENT R (optional - VMSINSTAL will do this for you)

$ CREATE/DIRECTORY ddcu:[ACCENTV1251] <C
$ SET PROT=(G:RE,W:RE) ddcu:[0,0]ACCENTV1251.DIR <CR>

2. Using VMSINSTAL to Install ACCENT R

VMSINSTALis a command procedure used to install software. The ACCENT R software is distributed in three savesets. During the installation procedure, several informational status messages will be displayed. The basic steps that will be executed are as follows:

1.     Getting target destination from the installer.

2.     Verification of system resources.

3.     Definition of logicals and globals symbols for the duration of the installation process.

4.     Selecting the desired ACCENT R gateway from the installer.

5.     Linking of the image file.

6.     Option to install the ACCENT R image.

7.     Write .COM files for later use.

8.     Option to add DCL HELP.

Each question asked of the installer contains a default answer within square brackets [ ]. To select the default answer, enter a <CR>. To get additional explanation for any question, enter a ?. A <^Z> will terminate the installation procedure.

Refer to Appendix C for information regarding messages from KITINSTAL .

Refer to the Guide to OpenVMS Alpha Software Installation for additional information on VMSINSTAL.

A. Log into the system account [SYSTEM].

B. Invoke the VMSINSTALprocedure:

$ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL ACC124 mmcu:
where mmcu is the device designation for the tape drive (e.g. MKA500:).

C. VMSINSTAL will issue a warning showing the active processes, and ask:

* DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE ANYWAY [NO]?
* ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE BACKUP OF YOUR SYSTEM DISK [YES]?

D. VMSINSTAL is ready to read the first saveset from the distribution medium:

* PLEASE MOUNT THE FIRST VOLUME OF THE SET ON mmcu:
* ARE YOU READY?

E. The ACCENT R installation banner will appear, along with requirements. At this point, you have the option of continuing with the installation procedure:

* DO YOU WISH TO CONTINUE [Y]?

F. Specify the target location for the ACCENT R files. The installation procedure expects the target location to exist, and contain no files. If the target location does not exist, the installer is given the chance to create it.

The installation procedure will verify that there are sufficient free blocks available on the specified target disk. The message Checking system requirements will be displayed.

a. Enter the target disk. To default to SYS$SYSDEVICE, enter a <CR>. To stop the installation procedure, enter a <^Z>.

* ENTER TARGET DISK WITHOUT ':' [SYS$SYSDEVICE]

b. Enter the target directory. To default to ACCENTV1251, enter a <CR>. To stop the installation procedure, enter a <^Z>.

* ENTER TARGET DIRECTORY WITHOUT '[]' [ACCENTV1251]

c. If the target location does not exist, you will be given the option of creating it. Enter <CR> to create the new directory, or N to be re-prompted for the target location. If you choose to create this directory, the file protection will be set (S:RWED, O:RWED, G:RE, W:RE) and the owner will be set to the parent of the account.

* DO YOU WISH TO CREATE target_location [Y]

G. The ACCENT R files will be restored from the distribution tape and copied into the target location specified in the previous step. The informational message Copying ACCENT R files into target_directory will be displayed.

H. Determine which ACCENT R executable you wish to install. The available options are ACCENT R only or the SQLgateway to Oracle. To default to ACCENT R, enter a <CR>. To select the SQLgateway to Oracle, enter 1.

NOTE FOR ORACLE: The ACCENT R SQLgateway to Oraclerequires version 7 or greater of Oracle. Please ensure that all logicals associated with Oracle are defined before attempting to link the gateway. See your System Administrator/DBA for the correct Oracle logical assignments.

* ENTER A GATEWAY NUMBER (1) OR 0 FOR ACCENT R ONLY [0]

The installation procedure will build the ACCENT R executable. It will also build the Host Language Interface. You will see the messages Please wait, linking... and, upon successful completion, ACCENT R has been successfully built.

If any errors occur during the building of the ACCENT R executable, an error message will be displayed and the installation procedure will be automatically terminated. Please note any errors.

Possible fatal errors are:

1. A required library is missing

2. The linking file (.OPT) could not be written

3. The link operatiofailed.

In each of these cases, correct the problem, delete all the files in the target directory specified in Step F above, and restart the installation at Step B above. Please contact NIS if the problem persists.

Possible non-fatal errors are:

1. The linking file (.OPT) could not be deleted

2. There was a problem building the Host Language Interface.

An error message will be displayed and the installation process will continue.

I. The ACCENT R demonstration database files will be restored from the distribution tape and copied into a sub-directory of the ACCENT R target directory, [.BOOKS]. An informational message Copying BOOKS database into [target_directory.BOOKS] will be displayed.

J. Determine whether you want to INSTALL the ACCENT R image as part of the installation procedure, or wait until after the procedure has been completed. In either case, the file NIS:ACCINSTALL.COMis created during the installation procedure, and is located in the same directory with all the ACCENT R files. Enter <CR> to execute the NIS:ACCINSTALL.COM file now, or N to defer execution until later. If you choose to wait, the command file can be executed with @NIS:ACCINSTALL.

* DO YOU WISH TO INSTALL THE ACCENT R IMAGE NOW [Y]

K. The remaining .COM files specified in Step 6 of this section will be generated and the informational message Writing out utility .COM files will be displayed.

L. Determine whether you want to add ACCENT to the DCL HELP library. To default to YES, enter a <CR>. To not add ACCENT to the DCL HELP library, enter NO. Note that ACCENT R has extensive HELP once ACCENT R is invoked.

* DO YOU WISH TO ADD DCL HELP ACCENT [Y]

3. Install the ACCENT R Executable (if not done through VMSINSTAL)

If you said NO to the question above during the VMSINSTAL procedure, install the ACCENT R executable as a shareable image. Use the file created during the VMSINSTAL procedure.

$ @NIS:ACCINSTALL
NOTE that ACCENT R must be installed as a shareable image with PRIV=SYSLCK

4. Define the Logical Names for ACCENT R

Place the following logical names in the system (group-wide) login file (SYS$MANAGER:SYLOGIN.COM) or in the users personal login file (SYS$LOGIN:LOGIN.COM), whichever is appropriate. You can use the file NIS:ACCSYMBOL.COM as a model.

$ ASSIGN ddcu:[ACCENTV1251] NIS
$ ASSIGN NIS NISUTL
$ ASSIGN NIS:ACCHLI ACCHLI

5. Define the Global Symbol to Invoke ACCENT R

Place the following symbol in the system (group-wide) login file (SYS$MANAGER:SYLOGIN.COM) or in the users personal login file (SYS$LOGIN:LOGIN.COM), whichever is appropriate. (See section 1.3 of the Guide to Using DCL and Command Procedures on OpenVMS.) You can use the file NIS:ACCSYMBOL.COMas a model.

$ ACCENT :== $NIS:ACCV1251.EXE  or
$ ACCENT :== $NIS:ACCV1251ORA.EXEfor    Oracleinterface

6. Add KITINSTAL Generated .COM Files

NIS:ACCINSTALL.COM

ACCENT R shareable image installation file. Add this information to the site-specific startup command procedure, SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM. (See Chapter 8 of the Guide to OpenVMS System Management and Daily Operations for more information.)

NIS:ACCSYMBOL.COM

Assigns required symbols and logicals for ACCENT R. These must be defined system wide or at the user level.

NISDATA:ACCBUILD_DEMO.COM

Copies sample database BOOKS from NISDATA into user's default directory.
